The Moose Test

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Volvo?

Good morning and welcome back to my monthly newsletter. It’s Friday! The end of the work week.. if you’re not a car salesperson… (sigh)

To start off, I have a question for you.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Volvo?

That’s right, let’s all say it together…

S A F E T Y

Here’s a story for you 👇

It all started back in the 1970s when a Swedish automotive journalist invented the Moose Test.

You may have seen videos of cars swerving in-between cones, that’s the ‘moose test.’ It’s to see if the car has the stability and control to handle a quick evasive maneuver in case a moose runs into the road.

no, this isn’t a video of a typical Miami driver changing lanes on i95

But, the problem with this test is that it requires a tremendous amount of skill from the driver to brake and steer with such precision to avoid another car, object, person, or moose.

So with Volvo’s determination to make their cars the safest on the road for the average driver, they went above and beyond to create their very own Moose Test.

They got to work and built crash test dummy moose (mooses? meese?) made of rubber and steel, but instead of designing the test to avoid the moose, they designed it to be safe in the worst-case scenario.

The Volvo engineers asked themselves, '“What if someone simply pedal-to-the-metal-floored their car into a moose? How can we make this safe?”

And that’s how they designed their Moose Test.

A moose is like a deer who bulked up on steroids, channeling its inner Hulk and became the heavyweight champion of the world

From these tests, they were able to identify areas where the roof could collapse, and then they reinforced those areas with boron steel.

The boron steel used on Volvo cars has a yield point of about 1,350-1,400 MPa. English translation: That's about four times stronger than average high-strength steel

The result of Volvo's efforts is a car that is incredibly safe in the event of any head-on collision. In fact, Volvos are the only cars that are tested specifically for this type of accident. So if you were looking for a car that will protect you and your family from the moose in Miami, you made the right choice.

And now you also know why Volvo has this emblem:
